The Majesty of God on His Heavenly Throne

Recently as I was substituting in the middle school concert band the word, maestoso, was boldly printed on the top of the musical selection we were to rehearse. I asked the students if they knew the meaning of this Italian word. After several incorrect guesses, I explained that the composer wanted the music to be played in a majestic manner. In order to astound the eighth graders with my wealth of knowledge, I elaborated that the music was to be performed in a stately and dignified manner. That experience reminded me of the time when I first began to see what the word majesty meant to me.

Majesty

I became a Christian over 50 years ago. One of the first songs I learned as a new believer has found its way into many of today’s hymnals. “Majesty”, written by Jack Hayford, was that particular song that made such a beautiful impression on me of the magnificence of the Lord. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OaRwD2Y7C0s

Majesty is a royal attribute unique to Kings/Queens as they are addressed as “Your Majesty”.

God’s Majesty

Israel’s King David gave us a great illustration of the true meaning of God’s majesty as described in I Chronicles. 29:10-12 10 David praised the Lord in the presence of the whole assembly, saying, “Praise be to you, Lord, the God of our father Israel, from everlasting to everlasting.11 Yours, Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the majesty and the splendor, for everything in heaven and earth is yours. Yours, Lord, is the kingdom; you are exalted as head over all.12 Wealth and honor come from you; you are the ruler of all things. In your hands are strength and power to exalt and give strength to all.

God’s Heavenly Throne

The prophet, Isaiah, had a vision of the majesty of God on His heavenly throne where he hears the angels declaring God’s holiness and splendor. “And they were calling to one another: “Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD Almighty; the whole earth is full of His glory””(Isaiah 6:3).

The Apostle John describes a similar vision as he recorded in Revelation. Revelation 4:2-3 At once I was in the Spirit, and there before me was a throne in heaven with someone sitting on it. And the one who sat there had the appearance of jasper and ruby. A rainbow that shone like an emerald encircled the throne. Revelation 4:8 Each of the four living creatures had six wings and was covered with eyes all around, even under its wings. Day and night they never stop saying: “‘Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty,’ who was, and is, and is to come.”

Almighty God

David, Isaiah and John’s natural response of seeing God for who He is was that of pure devotion. The Lord is worthy of every bit of devotion that we can bring to Him. He, as the King of Kings, is worthy and all of our allegiance should be to Him and Him alone. We worship Him because He is the Almighty God. We should offer our obedience to Him because His will is perfect. He is worthy of our love because He is the God of love who created us to enjoy a intimate relationship with Him.

I encourage you to reflect and meditate on:

  • the majesty of the Lord and
  • the splendor and glory that surround Him and
  • shout out like the psalmist “Lord, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory in the heavens” (Psalm 8:1).
