Looking for God, Where Do I Find Him?

Northwest Bible Church

If you are looking for God, want to find out about Him, find a relationship with Him, where would you look? I would like to share with you four places I have found Him.

Outside

Chasing Sunsets

The first place we look, we look no further than outside. When we look at nature in all of its complexity and intricate design, the design points to the Designer. “Since the creation of the world, His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made” (Romans 1:20). What has been made points to the Maker. Many will say they feel close to God out in nature, and while it certainly does reveal Him, we will need more specific revelation than that!

People Who Have a Relationship With Him

Another place to look is in the lives of people He has touched, people who have a relationship with Him. A good place is a local church, all of us are people whose lives have been touched by Him for the better. “The Spirit testifies with our spirit that we are the sons of God” (Romans 8:16). Not that we are so perfect, if we were, you wouldn’t like us very much. When God comes into our lives He does make a difference. Come meet some people who are a work in progress!

The Bible

A third place is the place where God has deliberately revealed Himself in specific terms to us. The Bible is God’s word to us. It is a special book. The Bible was written by real people under the inspiration of God, to give us His message. “Men moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God” (2 Peter 1:21). The Bible is a wonderful, practical book. It not only reveals God to us, but answers all kinds of questions. It points us in the right direction. “All scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.” (2 Timothy 3:16,17). It is the place to come for answers.

Jesus Christ

The most specific revelation of God we celebrate at Christmas. God explained Himself to us in the clearest possible way. He became a man, Jesus Christ, born of the virgin, Mary at Bethlehem. His conception was overshadowed by the Holy Spirit, so that, “The holy Child shall be called the Son of God” (Luke 1:35). He is fully God, and fully man, the living Word of God, explaining God to us. “The Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as the only begotten from the Father, full of Grace and Truth.” (John 1:14). His perfect life, His miracles, His incredible teaching were witnessed by reliable witnesses and preserved for us in the Bible.

Jesus Christ is God’s explanation of Himself to us. “No one has seen God at any time, the only begotten God, who is in the bosom of the Father, He has explained Him” (John 1:18). You won’t see God any place more clearly than Jesus Christ.
