How Can We Miss Him?

If we’re out on vacation, seeing the beauty of God’s creation, or just sitting on the deck looking at a sunset, we are seeing the design, that cries out the glory of the Designer. Once, I was on an overnight bus to Colorado and the sun was coming up in the mountains. The bus driver declared, “See that? My Father painted that”. “The heavens are telling the glory of God and their expanse is declaring the work of His hands” (Psalm 19:1). The hand of God is so evident, how can we miss Him?

His existence is seen in the earth, seas, and skies, that it is revealed clearly enough to make us responsible for that truth. “For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, eternal power and divine nature have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse” (Romans 1:20).

David is poetic as he declares, “Day to day pour forth speech, and night to night reveals knowledge. There is no speech, nor are there words, their voice is not heard. Their line has gone out through all the earth, and their utterances to the end of the world. In them He has placed a tent for the sun, which is as a bridegroom coming out of his chamber; it rejoices a strong man to run his course. Its rising is from one end of the heavens, and its circuit to the other end of them; and there is nothing hidden from its heat” (Psalm 19:2-6).

The rising and setting of the sun shows us the hand of God, how can we miss Him?

People miss Him because they are preoccupied and not looking, but it is often more insidious than that. We actively suppress the knowledge of God. Why would someone do that? Simply put, if there is a God, in my soul I know that I am responsible to Him, to be righteous.

Our God is more than a designer. He created us in His image, and His moral likeness in us wars against the things we would do, that we know in our hearts are wrong. The only way a person does evil in conscience, is (maybe only briefly) to pretend God is not there.

So, when we look at God’s creation and it stirs in us the knowledge of Him, I would challenge you to go deeper. He promised, “‘You will seek Me and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart. I will be found by you’, declares the Lord” (Jeremiah 29:13,14).

Obviously, we need more specific revelation than a sunset. Go to the Bible, it is what God has to say specifically to us. Find a church that honors the Bible and get engaged in it. You’ll find that knowing God and living a life that honors Him is just as beautiful as the sunset over the mountains.
